Developing a Communicative English Syllabus for Journalistic Students

Abstract

 

This study was designed as a developmental research with eight steps (identifying the problem, collecting the data, designing the syllabus, validating the syllabus, revising the syllabus, trying out the syllabus, revising the syllabus, and creating the final syllabus) which was aimed at finding the needs of English teaching materials for journalistic students in Universitas Bengkulu and developing a communicative English syllabus for journalistic students in Universitas Bengkulu. The populations of this study were journalistic students, journalistic alumnus, journalistic lecturers, and stakeholders as well. The samples of this study were selected with random techniques sampling, so that the samples became 32 journalistic students, 4 journalistic alumnus, 2 journalistic lecturers, and 2 stakeholders at TV station (ESA TV and BETV). The instruments used were a set questionnaire items and a set of interview adapted from Wikjayanti (2012: 92-112) in order to collect the data. The researcher used needs analysis to find out the students’ needs of English. The result of the study showed that listening skill gained 97%, speaking skill gained 100%, reading skill gained 97%, and writing skill gained 94%. From the result of data analysis, a syllabus was designed based on communicative approach for Journalistics study program in Universitas Bengkulu.
